Welsh-Language Events: Where to Find Them

How to find events actually held in Welsh, not simply events held in Wales.

Short answer

Finding events held in Welsh is a different problem from finding events in Wales. Most national listing platforms do not record which language an event is run in, so there is no way to filter for it. Awni is the most focused source for Cymraeg gigs, mapping Welsh-language music events across Wales on an interactive map with ticket links. Cwtch Events records the language of every event, so you can filter for events conducted in Welsh across all categories, not only music. For eisteddfodau, the National Eisteddfod site and local Menter Iaith branches list events that appear nowhere else, including community and learner-focused sessions. Welsh learners can also find informal conversation groups, often called Siop Siarad, through their local Learn Welsh provider. Tafwyl in Cardiff and the National Eisteddfod remain the two largest Welsh-language events in the calendar, and both publish their own programmes well in advance.

Every listing on Cwtch Events records the language an event is run in — Welsh, English or bilingual — so you can filter for events held in Cymraeg. We currently list across 1 locations in Wales, and the Welsh-language collection is growing.

Where to find Welsh-language events

  1. 1

    Awni

    Welsh-language music, Wales-wide

A dedicated platform mapping Cymraeg gigs with an interactive map and ticket details. The best source available for Welsh-language music, and better at it than we are.

  2. 2

Cwtch Events — Cymraeg filterThat’s us

    Welsh-language events across every category

Every event records its language, so you can filter for events conducted in Welsh — not just music, but workshops, community events, business and family activities.

  3. 3

    Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru

The largest Welsh-language festival in the world

Held each August, alternating between North and South Wales. The site also lists qualifying and preliminary events throughout the year.

  4. 4

    Tafwyl

    Cardiff's free Welsh-language festival

A free weekend festival at Cardiff Castle celebrating Welsh-language music and culture, with more than 40 artists across the programme.

  5. 5

    Your local Menter Iaith

    Welsh-language community events

Each area has its own Menter Iaith organising Welsh-language community activity. For a great many of these events, this is the only place they are listed at all.

  6. 6

    Clwb Ifor Bach

    Welsh-language gigs in Cardiff

A long-standing Cardiff venue that regularly programmes Welsh-language music. Worth checking their events page directly rather than relying on aggregators.

Common questions

What is the difference between an event in Wales and a Welsh-language event?
An event in Wales simply takes place in Wales and may be conducted entirely in English. A Welsh-language event is run in Welsh. Most listing platforms do not distinguish between the two, which is why Welsh-language events are harder to find than they should be.
Do I need to be fluent to attend?
Not always. Many events are bilingual or explicitly welcome learners, and some are aimed at learners specifically. Listings usually state whether an event is Welsh-only or bilingual, so check before assuming either way.
Where are the biggest Welsh-language events?
The National Eisteddfod in August is the largest, and Tafwyl in Cardiff each June is free to attend. Eisteddfod yr Urdd in May is the largest youth festival in Europe and focuses on young people.

We run Cwtch Events. Awni is placed first here because it is better than we are at Welsh-language music. Coverage figures are computed from our live catalogue and will change as listings are added.
